The “Nourishing Futures” project aims to develop and distribute a ready-to-drink, functional, hydrating, and nutritious beverage that will have a positive impact on the health of children suffering from malnutrition.
This beverage will be enriched with essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, and is formulated to support the healthy growth and development of children in vulnerable communities.
The project is already underway and is being developed in collaboration with the Biotechnology Research Group at the University of Antioquia. We are currently advancing in product design, validation, and pilot testing, with the goal of scaling up production and distribution in high-need areas.

Why We Take Action
Child Malnutrition is a Silent Emergency
Child malnutrition is a critical issue affecting millions of children worldwide, especially in regions with limited economic resources.
This condition can lead to serious health problems, delayed physical and cognitive development, and lower academic performance.
Nourishing Futures focuses on vulnerable communities where malnutrition rates are particularly high, providing a practical and sustainable solution.
The Child Malnutrition Crisis in Colombia
Chronic malnutrition affects more than 10% of children in Colombia. This condition not only stunts their growth but also affects their cognitive and physical development.
High food insecurity
Over 39% of Colombian households face food insecurity, struggling to consistently access nutritious food (FAO, 2023). This situation severely impacts children's physical, emotional, and cognitive development and perpetuates the cycle of poverty.
Growing Risk in the Region
The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that around 49,000 children in Antioquia suffer from chronic malnutrition due to factors such as forced displacement, structural poverty, and limited access to basic health and nutrition services.
Malnutrition and Dehydration
Acute malnutrition is one of the leading causes of child mortality, especially when combined with infectious diseases and diarrhea. This condition not only limits children's physical growth but also negatively affects their cognitive, emotional development and academic performance.
Nourishing Futures: A Bold Response to Malnutrition
The Nourishing Futures project by Fundación Sanrojal directly addresses this crisis with an innovative and sustainable solution:
- Development of a functional beverage made with encapsulated microalgae pigments, essential amino acids, and electrolytes.
- Objective: to fight child malnutrition and dehydration with a comprehensive, effective, and low-cost solution.
- The formula strengthens the immune system and promotes the physical and cognitive recovery of children in vulnerable conditions.
- Currently in the research and development phase, in partnership with the Biotechnology Research Group at the University of Antioquia.
In the first phase, we will carry out product research and development activities, along with pilot testing in a controlled environment.
Specific Objectives

- Test the effectiveness and acceptance of the drink through consumer studies.

The project has a sustainability plan to ensure the continuity of the production and distribution of the beverage in the long term. The packaging will be made from 100% recycled and food-grade material.
